Desde el 2002 CHANEL nos mantiene al borde de nuestros asientos preguntándonos en qué viaje nos llevará para la próxima colección Métiers D’Art (colección que honra la artesanía de los talleres de la marca y a sus colaboradorxs).
Hemos visitado Roma, París, Hamburgo, incluso India. Y este próximo 4 de diciembre el turno es el de Nueva York, ¡por tercera vez!
La historia de CHANEL se remonta a 1931 cuando Gabrielle Chanel visitó por primera vez los Estados Unidos destinada a reunirse con Samuel Goldwyn para negociar diseñar para películas. Camino a Los Ángeles, Gabrielle hizo una parada en New York solo para asistir a una recepción que se haría en su honor en el Hotel Pierre, justo cruzando la calle de Central Park. La relación de la diseñadora con USA siguió en construcción luego gracias a Neiman Marcus y sus colaboraciones con Vogue.
Ever since 2002 when CHANEL staged its first Métiers D'Art show we've been on the edge of our sits wondering where will they take us next. We've been taken to Rome, Paris, Hamburg, even India. And this December CHANEL has booked a one-way ticket to New York City, for the third time!
The decision to return to the city that never sleeps found its roots in Gabrielle Chanel's personal history back in 1931 when she first flew across the pond to meet with Samuel Goldwyn in Los Angeles to negotiate designing for movies. On her way to L.A, Gabrielle made a pit-stop in New York for a petite soirée in her honor at the Pierre Hotel, just across Central Park. The relationship of the brand was later propelled by retail partners such as Neiman Marcus and editorial partnerships with Vogue.

En años más contemporáneos, la marca francesa también fue el sujeto de la exhibición del Costume Institute en el MET en 2005 llamada “Chanel”, la cual celebraba una retrospectiva de los primeros diseños de Gabrielle así como los de Karl. Ese mismo año fue la primera vez que CHANEL presentó Métiers D’Art en USA en su tienda de la calle 57. El año siguiente - quizá porque el mercado americano responde muy bien a este tipo de estrategias - CHANEL volvió a la Gran Manzana para presentar esta vez su colección Crucero bajo la impresionante bóveda del Gran Central Station.
En el 2016, Karl Lagerfeld presidió la exhibición “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology”, donde uno de los vestidos de novia de alta costura fuera la piéce de rèsistance.
Cabe destacar que la última vez que un fashion show tomó lugar en el MET de New York fue el de otoño de 1982 de Valentino.
In more recent years, the French house was the subject of the 2005 MET Gala/Costume Institute exhibition aptly titled "Chanel", which celebrated Gabrielle's body of work. That same year, to gain momentum I would say, Karl held the first Métiers D'Art show at the brand 57th Street boutique. The next year he took his Cruise collection and presented it inside the impressive Grand Central Station lower vault.
In 2016, Karl Lagerfeld co-chaired the MET's "Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology" exhibition, with a bridal haute couture gown as the piéce de rèsistance of the whole mise en scène.
It is totally worth noting that the last time a fashion show was held at the New York's MET Museum was in 1982 for the Valentino Fall collection.
